Glow-forth Blog

A special place, forever and always.

(True story- I wrote this blog and then forgot to post it.)

I don’t believe in luck.

I believe everything is purposed… every single moment.  Every single part of our lives, never up to chance, but divinely appointed.  Every friendship, score of a ball game, seemingly random conversation.

And, I may dismiss luck, but I strongly believe in being abundantly blessed.   I am smothered in blessings- I have been given a good life.  Ridiculously enough, there are SO many times I take it for granted.  This week, however, I soaked in every. last. drop.

Many people have never heard of Fripp Island- its a small 3 mile island slightly north of Hilton Head, and slightly south of Charleston.  To get on the island you must have permission by a home owner, or have rented a home previous to showing up.  Its quiet, with little to no commercial development, and for me, its part of who I am.

Some of my earliest memories are on this island… I’ve been blessed by my generous aunt and uncle who have owned the same home for over 30 years.  That means that for years of my childhood this was where we came… at least once a year, sometimes several.  My dad tells a story about how one year, after he had not taken 1 day vacation for 3 years, we cIMG_1608.JPGame down for a week, and had such an amazing time we stayed an entire extra week.  If we could, we would do that now.  Because this entire week has been one of the most life giving weeks of my life… to have space to just be together, without any worry with what we should be doing, or what we could be missing.

To just be.  Is there any better gift?? To go to a place where you have SO many wonderful memories… and just be… with the people you NEED to be with the most?!  We too often are too busy.  This week, we’ve been unplugged, we’ve been on NO time schedule (except maybe nap time, because the littles can only keep up so much), and we’ve eaten all the sweets our tummies can stand.

Thanks for your patience while we were away!!  I answered what I could in short spurts, but ultimately wanted to unplug to be here.

Love you all!!

Mom-preneur: Mom + work, at the same time

That’s my Z-girl.  She looks a tad pale, with sunken eyes, because she has been battling one heck on an ear infection… which means her typical school day ended up tagging along with me!  We are weary from loss of sleep, but we are working today because that’s what I needed to do!    We had orders to fill, and decided we were going to do it together!

Spending time with her today, while in the same moments working, was what inspired this blog post… I could see how her little tired eyes perked up when she found out instead of laying on the couch in true ill fashion, we were going to sit in the floor and put order together.  It was NOT time efficient… and I had to go back and make sure every order was right by the end of it, BUT it was my favorite kind of work day.

I LOVE incorporating work into MY life, instead of letting work dictate my life.  It enriches my days with the kids because of what it causes us to do- they are learning what work looks like, we get to talk about stewardship, we chat about sharing life with others in genuine and vulnerable ways, we invite people over and have playdates and makeovers- its fun, engaging, and allows me to be what I’ve seen called a “mom-preneur.”  I’m able to do both things at once.

It seems easy to think that we have to work outside of our other duties; however, doing this type of work is easy to add in, instead on add on.  I am so grateful my kids want to spend time with me, and be part of other things I am doing…  all the while getting to see what it looks like to work for what you want.

And, what I want is to share life with others in real and impactful ways, while sharing makeup and skincare that have rocked my world.

The 4-1-1 on all things mascara

Mascara is my JAM. If I could only pic 1 makeup product to use everyday for the rest of my life, its HANDS DOWN mascara. I wouldn’t think twice.

So let’s go down the list… Whats the right technique for applying? How do we choose the right one?  How do we choose between waterproof and non-waterproof?  Lash curlers, are the necessary??  (Spoiler: yes, they are.)

How to apply it…. correctly

First things first… if you aren’t applying it correctly, then it’s not going to matter which one you choose.  What better way than to show you??  I really love this video… quick, easy, and easily duplicatable!

How to choose the right one

So now you know the right technique… but how do you choose?!

Y’all… I’ve been threw A LOT of different types of mascara.  Before I threw out my mascara graveyard 2cosmetic graveyard, I had SEVEN different types of mascara… some were WAY older than I’d care to admit, and many were thrown in there because they didn’t give me the volume in my lashes I craved.  (so why did I keep them?  I have NO IDEA…)

For 15 years I was walking down the cosmetic aisle at Walgreens or Target, choosing what appealed to my eyes at the time.  I had my go-tos… but I didn’t love them.

Three years ago, in pre-Senegence days, I found a mascara that I have LOVED from Thrive cosmetics.  It worked great for lengthening my lashes, wasn’t hard to get off… and was by the far the MOST I’d ever paid for Mascara… $25 a tube.  BUT- good mascara is a must (in my opinion).

Since I started with Senegence, I’ve been using the lashsense with undersense for my waterproof needs and sticking with Thrive mascara for my days when I only needed it for a short period, or knew I wouldn’t be exercising or crying (although… let’s get real.  You never really know when you are going to cry- I do it all the time. Drop of a hat.  I’m a crier.)

So here is what I will tell you, Senegence or not… invest in the good stuff.  Lashes and eyes aren’t something to fool around with.  Use quality mascara.  Quality mascara is NEVER a bad investment.

The NEW Lashsense… quality mascara blended with lash extend serum?!

I have been SO excited to share this with you… because there is FINALLY a way to extend your lashes and wear mascara in ONE STEP!

This is going to sound so silly… but, it’s the truth.  I have been using lash extend (our lash extending serum that naturally grows, strengthens, and hydrates your lashes) for months… but forget to put it on more days than not.  I wash my face most nights, but somehow just don’t think to grab the lash extend as part of my routine.  I can’t explain it.  I just don’t think about it.

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WHAT?!  A mascara that GROWS your lashes?! But how?!

!!! CapixylTM helps provide fuller and thicker lashes over time by optimizing the hair growth cycle. It stimulates the hair follicle regeneration process to activate growth while also reducing the hair follicle miniaturization process to limit eyelash fall out. The hair follicle self-generation is the key to prevent hair loss and improve hair growth that results in longer and denser lashes for a beautiful, bold look !!!

I don’t ever forget to put on my mascara.  I’m far too vain for that.  SO this new product is seriously SO exciting to me.  And seeing results… oh man.  If you are a mascara junkie, YOU NEED LASHSENSE.

Let’s see some testimonials?!  Yep.  This stuff speaks for itself.

Here are the FAST and DIRTY details…

  • Contains Capixyl, which has been clinically PROVEN in an INDEPENDENT study to grow lashes 47% over 4 weeks… does not irritate!
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Safe for use with contacts- Opthomology tests – approved
  • Brush shape and structure- help with fewer coats, to separate, to keep from clumping, etc.
  • Foops wipes & Liquid Foops will remove mascara. Waterproof formula: Let the foops sit on your lashes a bit if needed. Don’t pull on your lashes.
  • Curl comes from both the brush and mascara formula
  • Multi-zone Configuration Technology: improve curl, more definition, shows volume & length
  • Tube will last depending on personal use. It can last 2 months or more.
  • expiration date is 6 months after opening b/c it is an eye product. Highest concern about any eye product is potential for contamination / infection. Every time you open the container and put the wand in and out it increases the likelihood for contamination – so do not use if older than 6 months. (THIS IS GOES FOR ANY MASCARA!)
  • Layers: Use as many as it takes to get the effect you want. On average, ladies are using 2-3 layers.
  • ITS CLEAN- Paraben-free, Gluten-free, Animal by-product-free

Waterproof, or not?

This is really personal preference… but options need to be weighed.

  • If you are going to wear waterproof, make sure you have a great and gentle way to take it off (our FOOPS remover works GREAT!)… otherwise you will lose your lashes, and they will get dry + brittle.
  • Do you wear contacts??? Sweat a lot?? Are you a crier?! Then, grab waterproof.
  • Our regular lashsense does not flake off, leave raccoon eyes, and is easily removed.

The importance of an eye lash curler

Actually… with lashsense you don’t need one.  But if you are using any other type of mascara… its worth a look.  Using an eye lash curler helps to give you a more wide-eyed-wide-awake look… which is why we all use mascara, am I right?!

It’s really a personal preference… and how many steps you are willing to use in your makeup routine.  I’m going to go with LASHSENSE, because it does all the lifting, strengthening, curling, and extending for you.

Filled up to Pour out: Finding Balance in Womanhood

I’m 32 years old, and so far in my 16 years of “womanhood” I have failed miserably in many categories, and this is SO one of those areas I fall short.  I have an impulsivity to me… I see something I deem as valuable, and I want to be a part… ministries, leadership roles, fundraising.  I see needs and I want to fill them.  I have a VERY hard time stepping back, saying no, and watching others do it instead.  It’s ridiculous, really.  But, its a part of me I fight quite often.

Over the past 5 years it’s been increasingly hard because of the amount life has changed.  I won’t go into the details, but if you know me, you know we’ve been on a rollercoaster of extreme highs and difficult lows.  My roles have shifted hard and fast, and my life looks NOTHING like it did when I was 27.

In the midst of all that life flying by, it’s been a little easy to lose track of who I am… as I am sure EVERY woman finds at some season(s) of her life..  There are so many moving parts in our stories, so many roles to fill, and things to be done… that its easy to get 2 or 3 weeks into the hustle of life and realize you’ve done NOTHING for yourself, that leaves you feeling “filled-up”.  I mean… maybe its just me.  But I don’t think so.

And don’t get me wrong, this isn’t new to me because of our last 5 years where I added the title of “Mother” to my list of roles.  I did this before kids, too.  It’s true of any situation… we throw ourselves completely into what we do and who we serve, that sometimes it’s easy to lose track of ourselves.

And lately, I’ve been cycling…

Do you like my illustration?! HA!

Ok, but seriously, anyone else do this??!  Starting from the top…

  • I feel FANTASTIC… lots of energy, lots of motivation… ready to crush all the goals and do all the things!
  • Conquering… I start the list of to-dos, slaying goals, lots of interaction with others, feeding off the high of getting things done and productivity
  • Exhausted… but all the energy eventually fades, of course before everything is accomplished, because my lists are never over
  • Unmotivated/checked out… too tired to care, things fall by the waste side, just want to lay around and watch Netflix, which I can’t do, but I secretly wish its all I was doing
  • In my “cave”… in complete retreat mode, because I feel a tad depressed, have nothing left to give, and feel like I will never get back to fantastic… until a few days later, my energy returns, and I’m back at the top.

This last “crash” I decided, ENOUGH.

It’s time to rethink this… and get. out. of. the. cycle.

I need to look at how to balance life, our engagements, what fills me up, and where I pour out.

So, how else do you do this but make diagram?! (OK. Stop. I know. But I can’t help it… I’m a teacher, remember) .

PREFACE.  This is not a chart like pro/con.  I don’t need something like that.  I need a healthy way to evaluate where I am being “filled up” and in turn where I am “pouring out”,  where both sides hold equal value, but need to be in balance.

It felt weird doing this, because many things on the poured out side are what I value + look forward to most in my days- but they don’t leave me feeling filled up.  SO, if you do this, don’t think of it as a one side is better than the other.  Think of it as a, where can I grab renewed, refreshed, and energized spirit so that I can engage in activities that require focus, time, and energy.  Does that make sense? (probably not, because this is all me.  I didn’t get this from Rachel Hollis.  So its just my raw thoughts here.)

I think the heart of self-care is here

am I filling up enough, so when I pour out, there is something to give?

Because, I think we can all say… when there is nothing in the cup, ain’t nothing coming out of it thats of any use to anyone (and probably the opposite is true- what comes out of an empty cup is usually hurtful, to us and others).

And… it works both ways, too.  I think it’s important to also say, are you filling up too much?!  Are you focusing too much on what you desire and need, and not enough on those around you?

We aren’t meant to be imbalance on either side.  We are blessed to be blessings.

SO- what goes in the “filled up” category?!

Well… my friends who commented on my instastories + facebook post really got me thinking.  I asked for help here, because I only have my perspective. And, the bottom line seems to be that every woman gets filled up differently.  Which makes sense, because even if we look at one aspect of our personalities than make us unique, such as introvert and extrovert, you see that one gets filled with energy from alone time, where the other is filled up by time with other people.

And I float that line… I need a healthy dose of people, with a healthy dose of alone.  I think the Enneagram is a great resource into understanding ourselves better, and figuring out how to balance our chart, with the way we were hardwired.

HOWEVER, I do believe there are a few things that really should be on every single woman’s self-care list…. and they are…

  1. Exercise– doesn’t matter what type… but I believe every woman should exercise at least 3 hours a week (less than 30 min a day average).  I run and love yoga.  Both are essential for me… but they may not be for you.  Play around.. find what works.  I promise your psyche and your body will thank you for it.
  2. Healthy eating- This goes in both of my categories because it EXHAUSTS me to figure out recipes and fit food prep into our lifestyle… but when I do, it pays off x100.  When our meals are balanced, and our bodies feel good, it affects EVERYTHING else (as I type this I realized I didn’t eat lunch… and the imbalance continues…).
  3. Quiet time– Regardless of what your faith is, every person needs quiet time… to meditate, to pray, to seek the Lord, whatever that is for you.  Your mind needs quiet, alone, and space.  We have too much content coming at us ALL THE TIME.
  4. Rest– Ladies, we need it… we need to let our bodies have the amount of sleep it takes to rejuvenate.  We cannot let our sleep be at the bottom of our priorities list.  That laundry, those dishes, that mail you need to send… it will all be there in the morning.  Let yourself rest.

Some other things I need to have to care for myself…

  1. Time with adults- specifically my husband, and other like-minded women.  I crave deep meaningful conversation and connection.  And getting to hear and be heard is SO vital to me being filled up. (Date night, Girls night, etc)
  2. Time by myself- I don’t get this much… but I need time by myself, that isn’t exercise, or quiet time with the Lord.  I need time where I know I have a few hours and NOTHING is on the agenda.  Where I can go and be unrestricted… no one elses schedule is dictating what I am doing.
  3. Limiting social media- Yep… I have to turn it off.  I love that social media allows us to connect and interact, but I can get caught on there, and spend precious time I don’t have scrolling.  And when I do this, it makes the rest of my life feel hectic because I wasted time.
  4. Deep Bible Study- This fuels my fire (Thanks for this phrase Kelly!)… I love to study, and I love to study nothing more than the Bible.  To have an hour of uninterrupted, see where this takes me time… it lights me UP!

What self care is NOT

This was hard for me… because this changes from person to person.  Like for me… self-care would not be a week at the beach with my best girl friends.  Sounds crazy, right?! I would LOVE it, and I am sure the memories would be wonderful, but I would come home exhausted (probably worth the exhaustion though, right?!)

So… here are a few things I landed on that I think are fairly universal…

  1. The same as every other woman- We are all SO different that we cannot expect the way we care for ourselves to be the same.  So if your ideas of self-care don’t align with mine, thats totally fine.  We are different, and need different things.
  2. Over indulgence- Self-care is not an excuse to be over-indulgent… or to be selfish.  Like I said, its important to have balance, and to ensure that you are pouring out, just as much as you are being filled up
  3. Legalistic- Its ok to not exercise one day (or many days)… its ok to eat a brownie instead of a kale salad.  Again, balance.  Self-care isn’t a check list.  Its about actively pursuing things that keep you mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally healthy.
  4. Materialistic- I really don’t believe that self-care is a shopping spree.  Now, I went back and forth about adding this because I realize I cannot see into, and feel every woman’s emotions when shopping… and I do believe shopping can give you a little boost… but I don’t believe its self-care.
  5. Selfish- As long as you have balance, self-care is not selfish.  It’s needed.  It’s good.  It’s purposed.  Without it, you cannot be who you need to be for others around you.

Finding the balance…

Is hard for me, because in this stage I have to 1. say no to things of value that I desperately want to be a part of, and 2. asking for help.  I can’t keep up with it all- and I don’t need to.

I have found, sometimes, people like me, who hear of a need a jump up to fill it, are too quick to believe we are the ones who need to step up.  And when we step up when we aren’t supposed to, keep those who aren’t as quick from filling a role they were meant to fill.  IF I take on everything, I can do nothing well.  And if I take on every need, I hinder others from stepping in.

SO, finding a balance is different for everyone.  But I encourage you to really sit, think, reflect, journal, heck… fill in the venn diagram… and evaluate- where do you need to be filled up… and where do you need to be pouring out.  And, if you find imbalance like I have… pray. sit in silence. reflect.  And make some decisions and where you need to step up, or step out.

Love you all- let’s encourage one another, building each other up, to be the women we were purposed to be.20181009_122045

Britt (——> fall breaking with mascara and gloss only, and no bra!)

Let’s get real for a minute.

I’m 32 years old and over the past 5 years I have acquired a few new things… children, some high waisted jeans I swore I’d never wear, 2 wrinkles on my forehead + some crows feet around my eyes, among many other things… Yep, some of the things I’ve acquired have brought much joy… some are just a product of time… and some are unwanted, un-needed side effects of poor self care.

As of 9 months ago, I was washing my face with Dial soap and adding some Olay moisturizer when I hopped out of the shower. There were DAYS I’d go without washing my face, and my reason for it was… I’m not wearing makeup, so I’m finev(yep… I’d wipe my face with a quick wipe after running and call it a day… GROSS).

Uhhhh… that was not working, which my new found aging on my face proved over years of not being cared for + with age comes the need for a little more color to your face, regardless of what skincare you use. BUT I was not about to wear makeup… it smudged, smeared, and accentuated my dry patches. Nope. I was sticking with mascara and the occasional bronzing powder.

BUT when I saw an up close picture from my late twenties a year ago I realized, I needed to start investing more in self-care, or I was going to out age myself… and long gone will the days be when people think I’m younger than I am.

So, while pregnant with Ansell, I did a little research and decided to buy a few makeup items that weren’t from the Target makeup aisle. I was going to get the “good stuff”… finally wear a few things to cover up my lack of skin care maintenance. BUT, regardless of how much I spent on “better” cosmetics, it was still the same… rubbed off, sweated off, smeared, etc. I gave up.

THEN, I tried Lipsense, VERY RELUCTANTLY I should add. I noticed in some family pictures that we’d paid good money, that I looked very un-feminine. I was the least exciting part of all the pictures… which felt like a mirrored image of my life. I was the background… in the shadows… the least important. And I wanted something that made me feel beautiful and seen… even if it was a VERY light, neutral lip color. SO I invested the $60 for a lip kit, and thought… this is going to last me an entire year, and its the first thing in a while that I’m splurging for myself.

A month later, I was back for a second, deeper color (BELLA- every woman needs bella. Just saying). Two months later I was starting to think there was an opportunity here… how many women are like me??? How many feel unexciting? In the shadows?? Overlooked?? Least important?? If lip color could do for them what it had done for me, why would I not share that??

Oh, well… I wouldn’t share it because it was part of a PYRAMID SCHEME dubbed MLM. That’s why. I would much more quickly send someone to Target for some amazing pillow than share a product sold by a company with independent distributors (which… shame on me. seriously… who did I think I was?!).

But, y’all… I couldn’t stop thinking about it… and so I decided, its a $55 sign up fee… at least I’ll get my money back. I will share to a few close friends + family, feed my habit, make a few $$ to give to some organizations that tug at my heart strings, but ultimately, the small risk is worth at least tryyyyyyying it. (read my exact timeline of how this all happened here, in an earlier post this month)

But it didn’t take me 3 weeks to realize the potential here. The amazing products… the SKINCARE y’all. Now that I use life-altering skincare, I could NEVER go back to my bar of soap. Now that I have found makeup that is good for my skin, feels amazing, and looks incredible, I don’t have to go without OR worry while I wear it!

And thats why I want to share it with YOU! I want to do what I can to help you have the same experience I have… finding skincare + makeup that looks and feels amazing… all the while being GREAT for you!

I started this company excited to share and lead… and that excitement has just GROWN since then. I LOVE this job… what it affords me, how I can give to others, how I can offer other women a similar journey (or something totally different, depending on what THEY want), and that I get to do so while serving others. What an amazing opportunity… it just doesn’t get much better.
